Farm Fresh

I’ve been eating out too much lately.  My dumb pregnancy sickness was so bad that I just couldn’t stand the smells of cooking food.  (I can’t even call it morning sickness… It lasts all day long!)  While I’m still not feeling great, I was finally able to prepare real food in my own kitchen about 2 weeks ago.  And it feels so good to be cooking again, and it’s much better for us too, financially and nutritionally.

A friend in my ward gets fresh veggies weekly from a local farm, along with raw milk.  I got my first basket this week.  What a loot!  It is a ton of veggies for only $30. I got:

cherry tomatoes, red potatoes, sweet potatoes, spinach, radishes, cilantro, romaine lettuce, broccoli crowns, onions, spring onions, turnips, mustard greens, collard greens and a head of cabbage.

All local, all gorgeous.  And for a little extra, I got a gallon of raw milk.  Have you ever had raw milk?  It. Is. Wonderful.  The cream rises to the top of the jug.  You can just shake it to distribute the cream, or you can separate the cream from the milk… to make whipped cream or ice cream or butter or use it in soups or mashed potatoes…

I’m not sure what to do with the greens.  I’ve never really had them, so if you have some suggestions, I’m open to them.  :)  In the meantime, I’m googling Paula Deen’s recipes.

I think next week, I might even remember to take pictures. :)

  1. I am totally salivating right now. I've got to start doing a co-op. Greens? I have no idea. Paula will take care of you.
