I've adapted this recipe from one found on http://www.allrecipes.com/. It is my favorite white bread recipe for the bread machine. It is also very adaptable. I like to add garlic powder and italian seasoning for garlic bread, or even some dry ranch dressing mix (use a little less powdered milk).
2 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast
1/4 cup warm water (110 degrees)
1 tablespoon white sugar
4 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup dry potato flakes plus a pinch more
1/4 cup dry milk powder
2 teaspoons salt
1/4 cup white sugar
2 tablespoons margarine or butter or oil
1 to 1 1/4 cups warm water (110 degrees F)
Whisk together the yeast, 1/4 cup warm water and sugar. Allow to sit for 15 minutes while preparing the other ingredients. Add ingredients to the bread machine in the order suggested by your manufacturer, including the yeast mixture, which for mine is: liquid stuff, fat, salt, dry stuff, then yeast. Select the basic and light crust setting for a 2 pound loaf.
